How Breakfast Changed My Day

Sometimes, making progress in your wellness journey can be as simple as committing to a healthy breakfast.

We often think that big, sweeping actions are necessary for change. And though there's nothing wrong with making major changes in favour of our health, sometimes it makes it's challenging to get started. Often, baby steps are a great way to begin.

I can think of one baby step I've made lately that has made a huge difference in my life.

Let me explain.

Once upon a time, I used to put a lot of thought and care into the food I ate. I would carefully plan my meals, and lovingly prepare my snacks.

Then, enter twin babies. Everything changed. I focused almost solely on their needs, with every little attention paid to what or what I ate. I ate when I had a moment, which, if I'm honest, was rarely ever.

Even up until recently, I hit the ground running when our mornings begin. I get everyone changed, brushed and once breakfast is on the table, I prepare morning snacks. That rolls into morning lessons, and before I know it, it's lunch time and guess who hasn't eaten? Me!

(If I'm honest, I'll admit that I get hangry. It's really darn hard to be the type of mom I want to be when I'm hangry!)

So I knew I had to make a change.

I came across overnight oats awhile back through the Oh She Glows cookbook. The concept is that of putting oats, seeds, nuts, etc. in a jar and soaking it in milk the night before you plan to eat it. You can then add toppings like yogurt, fresh fruit, and natural jams, in the morning and enjoy it cold. It sounded great to me, but for whatever reason, it didn't really take off with me.

I was reintroduced to the idea through two different companies - Yumi Organics and Holos.

Yumi Organics is a basic overnight oats that comes in five flavours. I grabbed all five flavours to try out with my boys. They really enjoyed the act of  preparing their own breakfast the night before. It was nice and quick, and allowed us to meal prep a few of them at a time. It was perfect for our early mornings and got thumbs up from us.

Holos is similar in concept to Yumi Organics, but is filled with a lot more. You get plant based, protein, super foods like goji berries, white mulberries and maca, seeds, nuts, omegas, and probiotics. This one I tried for myself and enjoyed all four flavours - chai, maple and peanut, vanilla and cocoa.

So why on earth am I talking about cereal, you ask?

Because this one small decision that I made for myself had such a ripple effect in my day. I can reach into my fridge and grab a filling and healthy breakfast that keeps me fueled for hours. No more hangry mama! I can rest assured that I am getting the nutrition that I need so that I can be the best possible mom. I feel good and ready to take on my day when I have taken this simple step to look after myself.

So, yes, sometimes we do need to take huge steps toward our wellness goals. But sometimes, the smallest actions can lead to the biggest changes.

What baby step can you take today?
